The Grasshopper and the Bell Cricket and True Reality

Our own thoughts shape our own reality. Everything that happens to us is a reflection on how we view the world. The same exact thing could happen to two different people and it would mean different things to each of them because of their history, because of their memories, because of their family, and because of all the things that make someone an individual. Our interpretations are only our own. In Kawabata's The Grasshopper and the Bell Cricket, we see how an individual's vision effects their interpretation. Even though this story focuses on the vision of children, I think the deeper messages can be applied to anyone.

In this story we see how children can effect each other's lives without even knowing it. The names Fujio and Kiyoko were shown on each others chests in only a subtle light that the stranger can see. They will have an impact on each others lives, even if they don't notice the subtle details. I think children especially are impressionable and this is possibly a moment they will never forget. You can also see that the children affect each other with their lanterns. Even the kids that had the more expensive ones wanted to be like the other children and decorate it differently. I feel like that's something only children would do, adults would be less likely to give up something expensive or cherished for something cheaper or creative. Sometimes, I feel like we should be more like children. Unforgivingly immature and kind and gentle and careless.

I also really like the colors in this story, they bring the images to life. I want to know why Kawabata used those colors specifically, if they were for a holiday or just for fun.
